Marina Papais Glass Art Studio
In early 1990 Marina began her own studio and produced many works for Architectural, residential and gallery applications. In the 1990's Marina lived on the Squamish Nation and collaborated with Native Carvers such as Rick Harry and Norman Tait and his apprentice Robert Barratt. At the same time, Marina was creating Architectural Glasswork for Municipal buildings, Residences and Churches. Marina showed her work in various Vancouver Galleries such as the Simon Patrich on Granville, The Gaauda Gallery and the Sheppard Gallery in Whistler, and Destino's and the Morgan Dawne Gallery in West Vancouver. She has also shown her works in the USA as well as in Europe. Marina has attended five International Glass Symposiums in Europe as an invited guest to represent Canadian Glass Artists. She has won scholarships to Pillchuck International Glass School, the last one for her work with a series she called "Breaking the Mold". Marina has not, in her adult life, been able to live without Art as a Huge part of her life. It oozes from her. In the last five years, Marina has worked with her partner Daniel Collett to bring Mosaics to Ashcroft. Marina has also curated large public art shows in Vancouver called "Our Salmon, Our Children, One Earth". Her purpose was to educate people about the importance of understanding the plight of the Salmon and how it will and is affecting us all. Presently, Marina has again begun to work on smaller pieces suitable for Gallery works.

In late 2019 Marina began to explore painting again and this study of a scene from her back porch was what initially brought her back to the painter's pallet

On the way home from getting wood for the fireplaces, Marina saw the bottom scene happening and she stopped to take a picture of this amazing light show at the Slough. She drew then painted this piece on a four foot by thirty inch piece of Birch Plywood. It has now been covered in glass.

Marina took a trip into whimsy with this study of our beloved elephant mountain. Again, it has been loosely painted on a four foot by thirty inch plywood and will be covered with glass.

In the late 1980's Marina began her own studio and produced many works for Architectural, residential and gallery applications.
This piece is installed on Chartwell Ave. in West Van, the house next to Jim Pattison

Today Marina has retired into doing works that please her. This wall of glass in our own home was inspired by the architect that inpired the house we live in, Frank Lloyd Wright. We love large glass spaces and Marina has a very difficult time not doing every glass surface in mosaics or stained glass

When Chris and Steph decided to get married, the first thing Marina did was find a beautiful picture of them. Eventually they received this portrait drawn on plywood and later covered with mosaics. These portraits are family keepsakes.

Portraits of Love
Portraits of Love
These candid portraits of Love are what inspire Marina to draw. This image of Gianna loving her cow is one of many similar images captured for the 4H Club art Mosaic hanging outside the north end of the HH building in Ashcroft

2010 to Present
Marina continues to be prolific in her art renderings. In between larger works Marina works on her drawing and painting skills through smaller projects, often created for someone special
Often wonderful community members are willing to help make beautiful projects come to life. Time spent together making art for the community is bonding and very special

Marina began to get scholarships to Pillchuck Glass School in Washington, one of two such schools in North America. There she began to understand glass in many more of it's potential forms. Her works found themselves in Galleries such as the Simon Patrich on Granville in Vancouver, the Gaauda Gallery and the Shepherd Galleries in Whistler, and the Morgan Dawne and Destino Galleries in West and North Vancouver. She has also shown internationally. Marina also has represented Canada for Glass Art at Symposiums held in Eastern Europe during the 1990s on five occasions, working with a dozen of the best world glass artists each time, coming together to demonstrate their crafts as well as show their works throughout Europe

Some of Marina's pieces from the 1990-2010
Marina was able to explore the world of Pilchuck Glass School a number of times and learned a good deal about cast and blown glass. Although the other forms of glasswork appeal to Marina, she has stood true to the carved glass discipline. In fact, she was offered an ongoing scholarship for her work with a technique she entitled "Breaking the Mold" back in 2000.

Marina takes great joy and peace in quietly reproducing beloved family pictures into drawings on wood and then covering the drawn images in glass. These personal pieces she does in her spare time and in-between large architectural works. If you are interested you may request your own by contacting Marina.
